Who needs Reese's when you can eat nature's candy?

Full confession: I have a deeply entrenched sweet tooth. In fact, I LOVE a sweet treat, preferably of the chocolate variety. And don't even get me started on how much I love cupcakes. However, I know that binging on refined sugar is not good for me and does not make me feel good after the initial sugar rush has passed.

Did you know that there is mounting scientific evidence that sugar is as addictive as cocaine? HERE is just one article if you want to read more about refined sugar and its impact on our body chemistry.

I have found that when I intentionally cut out refined sugars my cravings for sugar diminish and my entire palate changes. What I mean by this is that after not having sugar, my body literally reacts to foods with lots of sugar in a negative way. Case in point: from last August through the beginning of December I almost completely eliminated sugar from my diet other than the maple syrup in my homemade mocha each morning. At some point in December, after many months of no refined sugar, I ate a cinnamon roll with thick frosting and my jaws seized up to the point of actually causing pain. WOW!! I have added sugar back into my diet in small amounts but have really fallen into the habit of avoiding foods with extra sugar on a day to day basis.

When I am craving something sweet, I turn to nature's candy in the form of fruit. I always have an apple for lunch and fresh fruit on my oatmeal for breakfast. I sweeten my daily oatmeal with frozen banana chunks. In this season, fresh pears are often a bedtime snack. A new addition to the line-up is eating a couple Medjool dates - did you know they taste like caramel? YUM!

How do you do with sugar cravings? Are you a fruit lover? Have you discovered the deliciousness of nature's candy? What are your favorite fruits? Leave a comment to share.

And if you love your Reese's but want to avoid the extra sugar, check out THIS RECIPE using dates as a sweetener. I'm planning to try this soon!
